It's Never Too Late to Pursue Your Dream!
I debated for a number of years after college as to whether or not I should pursue professional school. The more time that passed, the more certain I was that I was "getting to old". I'd look at people who were graduating and think, "I'd be graduating now too, if I had gone right after college."
I was having drinks with a girlfriend now evening, when I once again brought up my desire to attend dental school. " You won't know unless you apply. The worst that could happen is you don't get in and you're in the same position you're in now anyway. The time is going to pass regardless and I don't want to be having this same conversation with you next year."
That was all it took.
My friend reminded me that I was continuing to allow time to pass without taking action, all the while complaining about getting older. I looked into taking the classes I needed to apply to dental school and I quit my job a few weeks later.
I enrolled in dental school in 2010 at the ripe old age of 27. While I felt like I was older, I was nowhere near being the oldest student enrolled. And being 5 years older than most of my classmates had its benefits. I was a more more focused student than I would have otherwise been because I knew how much I had given up to get there. And I had friends who had already completed dental school and were able to help me pursue my goal of getting into residency after dental school.
There are many successful people who didn't get their start until after their 40s. It's never too late to be what you might have been.
Mary Kay Ash didn't start her makeup company until the age of 45.
Carolina Herrera didn't launch her clothing line until the age of 41.
Ava Duvernay didn't direct her first film until the age of 37.
Chip Wilson began Lululemon at 42.
While it's admirable to be on the 30 under 30 list, don't allow that to shame you out of getting a late start and being wildly successful. Who knows what you could be missing out of by trying to force yourself to be on someone else's timeline!
